Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but themselves.” - Stephen Moss

The Vanamahotsav week celebrated at GreenfieldInternationalSchool,Dharapuram ,was full of verve , enthusiasm and commitment from the students.Like every year, the main idea behind celebrating this Festival of Forests was to inculcate social accountability in students to protect the forests and practice eco-friendly ways to conserve the environment.

So,The very first day of this Festival saw all the children take an oath that they would protect and plant trees. The pledge was written by an 11th graders from our school. With Dharapuram reeling under scarcity of water, the main thrust of this year's Vanamahotsav was to preserve and save our trees on the school grounds.Thats how Project Conservation was launched which saw all the children bring two extra bottles of water from their homes and water the trees they have adopted.

Apart from the watering project the children sowed a lot of vegetable seeds ,wanting to try their hand at growing vegetables. They were those who bought some more coconut trees for the school. The week also saw our kindergarten children visited a nearby nursery and get acquainted with the greenery there.

Then there was the Green Salad Day and the Green Classroom Day,both of which saw very enthusiastic participation from our children across the school. There was a power point presentation by our Senior School Science teacher who took up the case study of how deforestation in Shimla has led to a deterioration of natural beauty and resources at this tourist place. The green greetings card competition invited a lot of beautiful entries, for which prizes were given away .Project Conservation continues till such time as there is rainfall in Dharapuram.Children will  continue to carry extra water for the trees and plants in the school premises.Compiled by Nalini Subramanian.
